बात 1998 की है। लोकसभा चुनावों में बीजेपी सबसे बड़ी पार्टी और राजग सबसे बड़ा गठबंधन बन कर उभरा था। अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी प्रधानमंत्री नियुक्त किये गये थे। संसद में विश्वास प्रस्ताव पर बहस चल रही थी। कांग्रेस और सीपीएम ने मिल कर सरकार के खिलाफ मोर्चा खोल दिया था। दोनों पार्टियों के नेता साथ-साथ बैठे थे और भाजपा-एनडीए के ऊपर तीखे हमले कर रहे थे।
जब कांग्रेस का कोई नेता बोलता तो सीपीएम के नेता मेज थपथपा कर उसका समर्थन करते और जब सीपीएम का कोई नेता बोलता तो कांग्रेस के नेता मेज थपथपा कर उसका समर्थन करते। एनडीए का कोई वक्ता जब कांग्रेस को निशाने पर ले के बाण छोड़ता, तो उस बाण से कांग्रेस को बचाने के लिए सीपीएम के सांसद ढाल ले कर सामने आ जाते। अटल बिहारी की सांप्रदायिक सरकार को रोकने के लिए सेक्युलर ताकतें एकजुट हो गईं थीं।
सरकार की तरफ से धुरंधर नेता जॉर्ज फ़र्नान्डीस ने मोर्चा संभाला। उन्होंने कहा, “अध्यक्ष महोदय! मैं आपको बताना चाहता हूँ कि कांग्रेस पार्टी के बारे में इस देश के एक बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण संगठन के क्या विचार हैं।” और जॉर्ज ने एक पतली सी पुस्तिका से पढना शुरू किया:
“Congress party is the fountainhead of corruption…(कांग्रेस सांसदों द्वारा शोर)…The British left and the Congress party replaced them. Over the past 50 years, Congress has established ever new records in corruption. (कांग्रेस सांसदों द्वारा पुनः शोर) Congress ministers have often been found embroiled in several scams, including Mundra scam, Churhat Lottery scam, Bofors scam, Sukhram scam, Harshad Mehta scam, JMM Bribery scam and Hawala, that took place during its regime. Congress has corrupted and misused every institution of the Indian democracy.”
कांग्रेस और कम्युनिस्ट सांसद उत्तेजित हो जाते हैं और लोकसभा अध्यक्ष से मांग करते हैं, “Speaker sir! Please ask the honourable member to name the source We can’t allow him to read from any unnamed document. Please restrain him.”
जॉर्ज फ़र्नान्डिस कहते हैं, “Please don’t get impatient. I’ll definitely name the source. But first let me complete what it says. It says, “The Congress party’s record on Secularism too has been chequered. At various times in history, Congressi goondas took active part in riots and killed people. 3000 Sikhs were butchered by them on streets of Delhi and prime minister Rajiv Gandhi watched it silently.”

जॉर्ज कहते हैं, “Just give me two minutes…and then I’ll reveal the source”
जॉर्ज पुस्तिका से पढ़ना जारी रखते हैं “Speaker sir, it says, “No country in history has ever progressed with bad governance and excessive corruption as partners. None! Congress suffers from this twin ailment for decades. Its survival is detrimental to the progress of India. Therefore, in the interest of this nation, it’s important that the Congress party is wiped out from this land forever.”
कांग्रेस और कम्युनिस्ट सांसदों द्वारा ज़बरदस्त शोर।
“Speaker sir! It cannot go on like this. We will not allow him to speak any further if he doesn’t give the source he is quoting from.”
“Ok, Ok” जॉर्ज कहते हैं, “There is more to read. But since our friends from Congress and CPM are so desperate to know the source, let me tell you what I am reading from…
…I’m reading from the Manifesto of CPI(M) issued just before these Lok Sabha elections.”
सदन में सन्नाटा… कांग्रेस और सीपीएम के सांसद बगलें झाँकने लगते हैं..
जॉर्ज गरजे, “क्यों, साँप सूंघ गया? बोलती बंद हो गई? बड़ा बोल रहे थे, we want to know the source, we want to know the source. सोर्स का नाम सुनते ही लकवा मार गया?…खुद पर शर्म आ रही है? आनी भी चाहिए…My friends from the Left! Either you don’t read your own manifesto or you don’t mean a word of it. In either case, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
In the name of secularism, you have joined hands with Congress that has broken all records in corruption. I urge you to introspect to determine your future course of action. And if you do not mend your ways, your party will become history, sooner rather than later.”
